A Christmas #salad #wreath

I made a Lamb Briyani tonight …which is the same recipe as Durban Indian Chicken Briyani .

I served it with Tarka Dhal and made this Christmas salad wreath with a cucumber raita centre to add a festive flavour to our Pre-Xmas dinner at our holiday home in the Mornington Peninsula.

I just put a small side plate in the middle of the platter and then layered the salad around it with a simple vinegar, oil and sugar dressing. The colour and texture are up to you. I used finely chopped iceberg, shredded carrot, quick pickled red onions and wedges of tomato. I filed the centre with cucumber raita but this Grape and Apple Raita would be lovely too. (The deseed chillies are decorative)

Old #Tapas favourites at new beach house #morningtonpeninsula

Lovely days settling into our #airbnb beach house at Koonya Beach in Blairgowrie, on the edge of the Mornington Peninsula National Park at the very southern tip of Victoria. This is a very special part of Australia.

View from point overlooking Koonya Ocean Beach, Mornington Peninsula, Australia

Today we went for a walk to Koonya Ocean Beach which is the nesting site of endangered birds and visits form wild seals. The coast is rugged and stunning with swim warnings along the way. After our walk we felt we deserved a lazy tapas lunch on the deck and a lazy afternoon, made extra special with time spent with our love,y new 6 month old granddaughter.

Lovely relaxing times in the lead up to Christmas.

Surveying the beauty!

Roman #Cauliflower? #Broccoli?

Found this beautiful looking vegetable at the EQ markets in Centennial Park, amongst the boring white caulis.

Googled when I got home and discovered it is known as a Roman or Romanesco Cauliflower.

Thanks Wikipedia: Romanesco broccoli (also known as Roman cauliflower, Broccolo Romanesco, Romanesque cauliflower, or simply Romanesco) is an edible flower bud of the species Brassica oleracea. First documented in Italy in the 16th century, it is chartreuse in color, and has a form naturally approximating a fractal. When compared to a traditional cauliflower, it has a firmer texture and delicate, nutty flavor.

Roasted it in the oven and served alongside minty carrots. Delicious nutty flavour and crisp texture, Happily high in vitamins C and K. If you’re lucky enough to find it – make sure you try it!

#Peas, pea shoots, broccoli and feta #salad

Another easy pea-sy salad that is delicious with grilled lamb cutlets and oven baked sweet potato fries.

Weekday dinners can challenge the imagination but the addition of a yummy salad to basic meat and veg combos can really make the difference.

In this case the addition of some peas and pea shoots, along with cubed feta cubes, a splash of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon makes for a great and very healthy side dish.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups or so of broccoli florets steamed or just cooked in the microwave
  • 1 cup frozen peas cooked to al dente in the microwave
  • 1.5 cups of pea shoots torn it or pieces
  • 1/2 cup feta cubes
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and cracked Black pepper to taste

Cook vegetables, combine all ingredients and serve.
